    gate city vs. burton

not much talk on this board, but the gc fans are getting into it on the clinch mountain board. they are copying and pasting quotes from here and saying how the team shouldn't take kindly to the humiliation they suffered last year.

Not a whole lot to talk about really. I figured you would see a lot of talk considering after last years game a few were a little PO'd saying we ran up the score on them. I hardly think 51 points is running up the score on someone, no one mentions two years before that when they threw up 60+ on us and I don't recall anyone saying anything then. Jimbo is too classy to run up the score on anyone probably other than Phil which he will probably never get that chance.

Could someone post a link to this Clinch Mtn Board so I can go take a peak.

The worst case of running up the score was 2001 when TS played St. Paul. B.I. Salyers was the coach then at St. Paul, and they were playing a TS squad that had only 22 players (3 seniors). St. Paul scored on the last play of the half and went up 42-0..and went for 2. Went out 66-0.

GC has a lot more at stake in this game.

Win or lose, JIB is already in the playoffs.

I guess the worst case I've seen was back in the 70's when Ralph Cummins was the coach at Clintwood and they had one of their best teams. Clintwood played Haysi and the final score was 72-0 I think.

Yeah..that's rough, but then again in the 70's things weren't as politically correct and folks could take a thrashing without everyone crying about it...highest I've ever seen in the books is the 193-0 thrashing Kingsport put on Norton in the 20's..imagine being at that game..lol

I remember seeing that one in the books. Could you imagine playing a game and looking up at the final score and seeing that you just got beat 193-0. How many minutes did they play in quarters back then or did they even have quarters?

Back in that day, quarters were 3 hours long and everyone wore leather cups.

    Re: gate city vs. burton

I'd say the quarters went a lot faster back in that day even if they were still 12 minutes because everyone pretty much ran it all the time.
